Begin by reading the introduction and Part 1 of the exercise in the text to gain insight about what is going on in this example. After reading this section, consider how you would proceed in helping the parties to resolve this conflict. Then, continue on and read Part 2 of the exercise, giving attention to each step and the checklist for each.
After reading the introduction and Parts 1 and 2, write a brief paper (two to three pages long) explaining how you would approach each of the four steps found in the guide from Part 2. You do not need to discuss every point within each step, but you are expected to consider each and to describe which of the points you feel would be most important in this situation; you also need to briefly describe how you might approach it. For example, if you think it is really important to indicate where each person should sit (Step 1, checklist item #2), explain why you feel this way. If you do not think a checklist item is of importance you do not need to discuss it.
When writing your paper you are required to address the following points:
Who will speak first and why.
Whether you will take a different tone with either party (even though the book recommends a neutral tone).
How you will handle the situation if the parties have negotiated for some time and are still at an impasse.
What you think is the most important aspect of the agreement (if one is reached).
Any topics other than the above four are at your discretion to include or leave out of your paper.
