Beginning in January 2020, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) takes effect. California residents will have the right to ask companies that handle or hold their data to disclose whatever personal information the company may have collected and are holding, and how and why they've collected it. The European Union adopted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is serving as the model for many data protection and privacy laws.
