Briefly describe an intervention procedure using evidence-based approaches from the behavior analytic literature.
FCT approach, and FERB and skill acquisition needed to reinforce bedtime behaviors. Devise targets for socially relevent behaviors for a child at bed time.
Target Behavior - self-injurious behavior
Setting - At home, alone, night time.
Antecedent - Parents put Mary to bed
Action - Mary engages in self-injurious behavior
Consequence - Mary's parents run into the room to stop her.
The function of Mary's behavior is to be to get her parent's attention. The behavior is attention maintained. Mary is a 7 year old who has been brought to you for behavior services for study on self-injurious behavior. The parents explain when the child engages in the behavior (usually at night) and let you know the child bites her arms, bangs her head on the corners of tables, and kicks her heels on the floor. This tends to happen when she is left alone during bedtime. The parents usually respond to this behavior by running into her room to stop her.
