Long-term exposure to others' traumatic experiences can result in a variety of different responses from social workers (Jimenez et al., 2021). Social workers who work with individuals who have experienced trauma must take time to think about how their work affects them (Van Dernoot Lipsky & Burk, 2009). In my experiences, I did not often hear about clients' trauma directly from clients. I heard about their trauma through members of their treatment team. One client, I will call Joe, had a very long history of trauma. The treatment team shared with me the trauma the child had gone through in which he lived in filthy conditions, and his mother was neglectful. I felt a tightening in my muscles, my heart began to beat faster, and I developed a headache. I was a new employee at the Department of Social Services (DSS), still completing training, and had just been assigned several cases. The tightening in my muscles and my heart racing are likely attributable to the information shared at the treatment team meeting. I am sure my headache resulted from the sum of everything that had happened throughout the day. When I returned home at the end of the day, exhaustion set in, and I found it difficult to concentrate. It is expected to feel exhausted at the end of the day, which requires much mental effort.
