Below is a hypothetical article about content related to PSYC100. It contains both true and false information, and accurate and inaccurate information about psychological science more broadly. Using what you know from this course so far, and applying content from the video on Thinking Like a Psychological Scientist, critically evaluate the below article.

You should use evidence from PSYC100 to support your arguments, and you are expected to cite your sources.

Your critical analysis will be uploaded as your final step this week. Itshould be no longer than 2 pages using 12-point font, and double spaced when in .docx format (Microsoft Word). This means you won't be able to cover everythingthat's okay! Use your judgment to critique the most important aspects of this hypothetical media article. Your critique should be evidence-based and refer explicitly to course material. Be sure to justify your critiques with evidence from the course.

NOTE: Any content going beyond two (2) pages will not receive feedback. Please upload your assignment using Word Doc (.docx) or PDF. As a Queen's student, you have free access to Microsoft Office programs. Please seeherefor how to access your free version of Microsoft Word.

"Author: P. Blart, Online Investigative Journalist

Recently, there was a viral Facebook post where a man was looking for his long-lost fraternal twin. They had been separated as infants. Because they are fraternal (dizygotic) twins, by sharing his picture, he was able to find his twin (because they looked identical!). These twins recently met up as adults at age 64.

As an online journalist, I was very interested in understanding the science behind this twin reunion. Twins share 100% of their DNA. Using EEG, known for its strong temporal resolution, I compared their neuronal responses to images from popular videos that they both were familiar with. Their responses were very similar! Thus, using this methodology, my research findings seem to replicate the finding that twins share 100% of their genetic material. Further, in terms of brain function, I was able to determine that the twins had surprisingly similar thresholds of excitation. These findings confirm that twins are almost identical in almost every way as adults. Using the methodology described above, in addition to exploring their "traces" on social media for naturalistic responding, which is consistent with best research practice in twin studies, I found the following:

  • Both twins are fans of hiking and physical activity
  • Both twins work in sales
  • Both twins have blue eyes
  • Both twins completed undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce degrees

Consistent with other research in this area, my research has determined that identical twins do indeed share 100% of their genetic material, and that as adults, twins are just as identical as they were as infants. Indeed, my results are consistent with other research that shows that the majority of traits are caused by genetics."
