Betty works at a busy retail bookseller as a clerk. Betty was recently in a car accident which has left her completely deaf in her left ear and only with 50% of her hearing in the right ear. Her job requires that she restock shelves, check inventory and answer customer requests for assistance, in addition to being available at the cash register in the front of the store. She is also responsible for conducting story hour for children ages 2-7 on Saturday mornings. As a result of her hearing loss, Betty is having troublehearing customers ask questions. Further, she is reading so loudly to the children that they are scared to attend story hour and attendance has dropped significantly.

Betty has requested that all customer requests for assistance by put in writing and that she have an assistant read the stories for story hour. The approximate cost for these measures is $20,000 per year. The bookstore has net profits of $5 million per year.
