Homework: Lecture # 4

  1. As part of a stroke prevention program, public health officials in city A wanted to determine if the mean diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of normal young adult females differed from 70 mm Hg. They randomly selected a sample of 12 healthy young women from city A and obtained the following results:

DBPs in mm Hg: 73, 65, 70, 68, 75, 77, 71, 69, 66, 70, 79, 72

Using the attached SAS file (homework4.sas), perform a one-sample t-test.

Assume the sample was drawn from a normally distributed population.

Use = 0.05 (two-tailed) and assume 80% power.

State the null and alternative hypotheses. (10 points)

List the critical value. (10 points)

Replacing the response lines, report your decision (reject Ho and accept Ha OR fail to reject Ho) based on the critical value, P-value, and 95% confidence interval for the difference between the population means. (30 points)

  1. The mean length of the menstrual cycle in normal females is assumed to be 29.5 days. The following data are the lengths of the menstrual cycle in a random sample of 15 human females:

27, 25, 30, 32, 25, 25, 23, 30, 31, 30, 29, 27, 31, 26, 28 days
