Blessing, a registered nurse, works in a rehabilitation ward in a small Queenslandhospital. She works closely with Jen, a registered physiotherapist, who providesphysio to Blessing's patients as part of their rehabilitation. They have workedtogether for some years and Blessing has heard only positive things from herpatients about Jen's skills as a physio and her caring nature and has observed thesetraits herself. However, over the past three months Blessing has observed that Jenis not her normal bright, cheerful, and enthusiastic self. She looks drawn and looksand sounds tired, she has been moving slowly and as if she could be in pain and hassnapped at her colleagues and some of her patients on a number of occasions. Shehas been slow to respond to questions or comments from colleagues and patients.Blessing has also noted that some patients have had severely aggravated symptomsafter physio with Jen, to an extent (in terms of the consequences and the number ofpatients) she has not seen before in her years of working with her. On two occasionsBlessing saw Jen handle a patient in a way that raised Blessing's concerns that theJen was a little rough. On a few occasions Blessing has asked Jen if there is anything wrong, if she was ill,if she could help and was snapped at by Jen. Blessing reminded Jen about theemployee assistance program - the confidential counselling provided free of chargeby their employer - as well as the nursing and midwifery support service and wastold to mind her own business. No one else seems to have noticed anything but they either have only just commenced working with Jen or do not work closely with her.Recently, a patient complained of severe pain immediately after physio with Jen andwas found to have fractured a vertebra. Blessing is deeply concerned about hercolleague and about her patients.
