Blood is composed of plasma (a clear fluid with various proteins and ions) and cells (the overwhelming majority of which are RBCs). The hematocrit (volume fraction of cells) in human blood is typically 0.40, whereas that for bovine blood is 0.35. We wish to perform some tests for a pump that will be used as a component in a heart lung machine (for humans) using bovine blood, and so will need to adjust the hematocrit of bovine blood to human levels. To do so, we shall filter out some of the plasma from bovine blood, and use the filter retentate as our experimental fluid. If we need 10L of fluid with human levels of hematocrit, how much bovine blood do we need to obtain, and what amount of bovine plasma should we discard. (Hint: draw a picture of the process, and identify the inputs and outputs to the system)
