Blue Water Clinic is a mobile field medical facility that has been offering Covid-19 vaccination services to rural communities in southwest Ontario under the supervision of medical authorities. With the opening of schools, apublic places and now U.S. Borders, the clinic offers second dose of vaccine to those who have previously had their first dose. As AstraZeneca vaccine is not highly in demand, the clinic only offers the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, which are administered in mobile stations.
The recipients of the second dose have to schedule their appointments in advance. Upon arrival they are registered and their OHIP and previous vaccination records are check by administrative staff, which takes about 2 minutes being be medically triaged. Two registered nurses (RN) are available to do the triage and enter any pre-existing medical conditions that should be noted for vaccination. The first RN is using a faster laptop and completes the triage in about 2 minutes (on average) and the second RN does the triage in 3 minutes (averagely) as she is using an older laptop. Once the triage is completed, vaccine recipients would go to Moderna vaccine booth in which one RN administers their Modrna second dose and monitors the potential immediate reaction in 4 minutes (on average) or go to Pfizer vaccine booth in which one RN administers their second dose of Pfizer vaccine in 5 minutes (on average) and monitor potential immediate reaction. All recipients will be monitored for by one RN for 2 minutes (on average basis) in a tent to ensure they do not have secondary serious reaction to the newly received vaccine before they are allowed to leave. In recent months the clinic has received and administered equal number of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines (50% each). The health authorities are considering the expansion of mobile operations and have hired you as a consultant to help them with this decision.
To do so you need to:
1. Draw the process Flow chart of second dose vaccination operations. 2. What is the maximum time it takes to complete the entire process for administering the second dose of Pfizer? 3. Identify where (what activity or activities) can hinder or slow down the operation and why? Mark the bottleneck(s) on the flow chart 4. On average, how many vaccines (Moderna + Pfizer) can be processed per hour in this operation?
