It is important to exercise your knowledge to own it. This is especially true in the world of lean six sigma. Therefore, one of the requirements of this course is that you apply the concepts and tools that you are learning from this course in a real project.
Select a process to improve and apply the DMAIC steps to that process. In the real world, you would be working with a team and have a great deal of flexibility about which approach and tools you would use to solve a problem. This project is to be completed on your own or possibly with the assistance of people involved in the process that you have selected. To manage and grade a large number of students taking this course, the documentation for the project is standardized.
Step 1: Select a Process to Improve (This past is done in the proposal)
During the first month, I suggest you to select a process from your working environment. If you are not working in a company, you may select a process taken places on-campus such as the cafeteria, the bookstore, or the library. The best process to select involves a real-world problem that you have a vested interest in solving. Alternatively, you can propose any process that you are familiar with and have access to. Consider whether the improvement of this process would look good on a resume. Would you be able to use this an example of how you have applied the DMAIC process in a job interview? Consider whether this process would help others beside you. Ultimately, you need to strike a balance between doing a significant project that may be big and complex, with a project that is simple enough to use as an explanation of the DMAIC process. Once you have decided on a candidate process or two, be sure to review the rest of the project requirements to be sure you have an idea of how the project will roll out.
Step 2: Write a Proposal and Get Instructor Approval
In your project proposal, please include the following items:
- Explain the process that you selected.
- What is the problem that you want to solve?
- What are the expectations after solving the problem?
- What are the Lean Six Sigma tools that you may use in your project and why?
Step 3: Create a Project Plan
While you are working on your project, you are encouraged to develop a project plan similar to the DMAIC framework.

Step 4: Execute Your Project
During the execution of the project, if you have any question please let me know. If you have a good project, I may work with you after the semester is done to publish it in any lean six sigma conference such as Engineering Lean Six Sigma conference.
Step 6: Submit your results
- You are required to submit a final report in PDF or Docx format. The report is expected to be comprehensive and includes all the details of the project.
- You are also required to submit a PPT presentation for the project as you are presenting your project to your supervisor at work or audiences at a conference.
