Part 2 Dependent Variable Template

Task 1: Your first task is to reproduce the output of the Brainstorming assignment. If you are using one of the topics you submitted in that assignment, you can simply copy and paste your responses from the earlier assignment. If you choose a new topic, you will need to provide responses concerning your new topic.

Identify a broad topic that you have curiosity for or would find research interesting. You may begin with a phrase such as: I would like to explore...
Expand upon this by phrasing a fundamental research question. You may begin with a phrase such as: I would like to know if there are connections between... and ....
Dependent variable In the connection statement above, identify which factor you have listed that you think could depend on the other(s).
Explanatory variable(s) In the connection statement above, identify which factor(s) you have listed that you think could explain the dependent variable.

Task 2: Develop a title for your project that incorporates the research topic, concisely explains what you are doing, and provides focus for the paper. Do not use "Statistics Project" or "Senior Seminar Paper".

Task 3: Thoughtfully define a unit of the dependent variable. This is not simply a description of your research interest. This is no longer a concept, but an operationalized measure of your research interest.

Indicate whether the variable generates time-series or cross-sectional data. See to it that your variable definition indicates the unit of measurement. If time-series data is used, indicate time length of each observation (i.e. daily, monthly, or annual). Indicate a source or at least a potential source.

Describe any variable as if you were giving someone instructions for finding or replicating the information you use. Be as specific as possible about characteristics and timing of the dependent variable.

Task 3: Operationalize Dependent Variable

Task 4: To help you and your reader precisely understand the dependent variable (primary research variable), envision the first few lines of data for this variable. Do not be concerned about the explanatory variable(s). That will come later in Part 2. Fill in the yellow shaded cells with what you think your dependent variable will look like. Remember, this does not require you to have the data or to find data. To do research, it is useful to have an expectation of what the data will look like. Record this expectation.
