In February 1992, Stella Liebeck ordered a cup of coffee at the drive-thru window of a McDonald's restaurant in Albuquerque, NM. The car was being driven by her grandson Chris, and did not have cup holders. After ordering the coffee, Chris pulled the car into the parking lot and stopped so that Stella could add cream and sugar. She placed the coffee between her legs and began opening the sugar and cream packets. The coffee was so hot that it melted the cup, spilling the coffee into her lap. She received third degree burns to her genitalia, buttocks and upper thighs. She later sued McDonald's to recover her medical costs of $20,000
