BUSINESS 255 (Winter 2020) HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT HRISSUE PAPER 2: CAREER PLANNING/SELECTION Assignment This individual assignment is worth 10% of the final grade and is to be submitted in hard copy form at the beginning of the class, Thursday, March 5, 2020. A late submission will have one mark deducted (out of the available 10 marks) for each calendar day that it is late. Non-submission will result in a mark of o. Approach and Format This assignment mainly focuses on preparing a personal Self-Assessment as an aid to your career planning. There is a shorter second part to the assignment dealing with selection. (A) In preparing this self-assessment, deal with the following topics: What do you value in relation to a career? What is your situation or circumstance in life (things that may present opportunities or constraints)? Describe your relevant knowledge, skills, abilities and experience in relation to the job market (what can you sell)? What are your work interests and aptitudes? What are you good at? What are your accomplishments that may have a connection to future career aspirations? What are your weaknesses that perhaps can be strengthened? Goal setting-what would be an ideal job/career for you? In relation to this, where would you like to be/what would you like to happen over the next 5-10 years? To prepare for your future, what are you willing to do now and over the longer term to prepare yourself for this job/career? (B) If you were an employee working in the HR department of an organization hiring for your "ideal job/career", what steps would you include in the selection process to help choose the best candidate? Why? Also include the questions you would ask candidates at the interview stage. Organize your discussion approximately around the above topic areas. Discuss the above issues in about 4-5 pages (give or take), single-spaced. There is no need to do outside research for this assignment. Evaluation Submissions will be evaluated on the quality of the written presentation including proper grammar and spelling. The presentation should be clear, demonstrate considerable personal reflection, insight and discovery and generally provide evidence that effort and thought have gone into the work.
