Assume you are the manager of a factory that emits waste (air pollution) through a smokestack.you have recently undergone an inspection and are within the requirements set by the EPA for the pollutants you emit.You are aware however that there is a high instance of respiratory illnesses in the area near your plant. A new "scrubber" (an air pollution control device used to remove particulates and/or gases from industrial exhaust streams) has recently become available that could reduce your emissions even further. The cost of this new equipment is $1M - not a small sum no matter how large your business is - and you will have to lay off several employees to cover that cost. The profitability of the firm may also suffer due to decreased [profits and a lowering of the stock price.
