GUIDELINES FOR THE INTERVIEW ASSIGNMENT

This is a group (2-3) assignment.

The objective of the assignment is to learn about managerial functions in an organization by engaging in a live conversation with an active manager.

The assignment is to conduct an interview with a manager of an organization and learn first-hand what they do on a daily basis. The organization can be for-profit or non-profit (charitable organization, government agency) and can be of any size. Family business is fine.

You will need to maintain the highest professional demeanour in all aspects of the interview process as you are representing Douglas College. Unprofessional attitude and approach reflects poorly on you, your group, instructor and the College. You should be respectful of the manager's time, privacy and only share information that you have received consent before submitting to the instructor.

Suggested interview questions: Here are some questions to help you get started. You can add more and/or modify them to suit your situation.

1.What does your daily schedule look like on a typical day? Provide a summary of tasks.

2.How often do you engage in strategic planning decisions for your firm?

3. How would you characterize your management style?

1)Directive (you make most of the decisions and tell others what to do) 2)Delegate/hands-off (you let the person(s) responsible make all the major decisions) 3)Collaborative/participatory (you consult others in the firm before making the decision) 4)Others.

4. How often do you assess the firm's performance, employee performance, process effectiveness? How are your performance standards measured (industry benchmarks, past history, others?)

5. Of the P.E.S.T.E. (political/legal, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental) forces, which factors affect your organization the most, positively and negatively?

6. What type of P.O.L.C. (Planning, Organizing, Leading, Control) activities do you do?
