ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF GRAVITY DAM PROBLEM: A gravity dam is to retain a maximum water level 25 meters above its base with a maximum wave height of 2 meter as freeboard. The top width is 6.0 meters. Concrete to be used has f'c= 21.5MPa Allowable bearing pressure of foundation is 215 kPa. Coeffi- cient of friction between the base of dam and the foundation is 0.75. Uplift varies linearly from full hydrostatic pressure at the heel to zero hydrostatic pressure at the toe. Design the cross-section of the dam. A. considering all loads, except seismic load. B. considering all loads with an earthquake acceleration a = 0.21g. C. Two design sections are presented for analysis, determine their dimensions for safety and determine which of the two dams has the most economical section, the length of the dam is 175m. Solution
