California Grapes {CG} distributes grapes from local farmers to a chain of grocery stores across the country. There are currently two packaging plants one in Monterey, California and another in Bakerseld, California. At each of these plants, grapes are packed into retail boxes, using two different packaging processes, that have been setup for test runs. One system was implemented at the Bakerseld location, and another is being tested at the Monterey plant. The personnel and equipment needed for the two systems are basically identical. The production manager for CC. has sampled data from 15 randomly selected test runs at each of the plants over the past month to prevent bias from potential shift effects. This data will be used to begin assessing the differences between each of these packaging processes and make suggestions for the second batch of test runs, which will occur over the next 15 days. Data collected for the rst batch of test runs is included in the Excel le r'PlantData\". The data has been organized as follows: The rst tab contains data from the Monterey plant and the second from the Bakerseld plant. The rst column contains the total time required for the test run that day. The second column contains the total number of boxes packed. One drawback to the collected data is that setup times weren't differentiated from the marginal packing time. Only the total time is provided, however, regression analysis can be used to approximate the setup time and the marginal packing time. The intercept represents the estimate setup time and the slope estimates the marginal packaging time. This was a concern that was brought forth after the data was collected due to the fact that the test runs were smaller than runs would be once implemented permanently. As a result, in the long run the marginal packing time will have much more of an impact on the total time than the setup time. The objective of the testing process is to adopt the system that is the most efcient in terms of the average packaging time required to pack a box. The end goal is the select the process that is the most efcient and implement this process on the established production lines, throughout each of the plants.
