Back in November, a contract was awarded to Microsoft to build augmented reality headsets for use on the battlefield (Solon, 2019). The reality headsets would be used on the battlefield and would increase lethality by enhancing the ability to detect the enemy. More than 50 Microsoft employees have protested against this contract with the U.S. Army. Many of the employees stated, We did not sign up to build weapons. Microsoft has worked with the military or law enforcement in the past, back in June Microsoft was working with immigration and customs enforcement, and more than 100 employees protested against helping the ICE agents because they were separating migrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

This issue Microsoft is experiencing is related to topics we have covered in class by using technology to assist with warfare; this is not cyber war, but it is helping the Soldiers on the battlefield. My opinion is that if Microsoft employees do not want to support our military and keeping the enemy out of our country, maybe they should work somewhere else. They are not making a weapon system; they are making a tool of the Army to assist Soldiers and enabling them to have the advantage on the battlefield. If Microsoft knew that their employees were going to protest against this contract, then they shouldnt have placed a bid. After reading the article, this technology definitely will assist our military while on the battlefield. The only issue I see is if this technology gets into the enemys hands which would allow them to have the same capability. Also, if these devices were to get hacked not to show the position of the enemy would cause more problems on the battlefield. This technology needs to ensure proper testing has occurred before using during battle.
