One of the most important responsibilities of a systems analyst is to identify the requirements for a project by gathering information from various stakeholders of the system. Stakeholders include the users of the system, those who are paying for the system, and those who develop and will support the system after it is implemented. The stakeholders may have different opinions on what the system should do.

This week, you will begin the system development process by initiating requirements gathering. The success of any IT project depends on clearly understanding what will satisfy stakeholder expectations. These expectations can be expressed as a collection of functional and non-functional system requirements. Functional requirements define what the system does or does not do. Non-functional requirements specify how the system should do it.

Analysts must do a great deal of translation between the stakeholders description of their system requirements and the detailed specifications for building the system. The case study provides descriptions from which your group may develop an appropriate list of system requirements. You will not find explicit statements about non-functional requirements. Instead, your group must infer what the system should include. Specific decisions need to be made related to items such as cloud vs. on-premises storage of information, database systems, operating systems, programming languages, computing hardware, network components, and various types and levels of security. You may leave some of these non-functional requirements somewhat open-ended and refine them later in the project as you gain a more complete understanding of the system.

The first activities of the system development process are to identify project stakeholders, the functional system requirements based on the needs of the stakeholders, the non-functional requirements that will allow the system to function effectively and securely and determine how to collect the information from stakeholders.
