Research Paper

The FASB recognizes the different financial reporting needs of publicly traded companies and privately owned companies. In 2014, the FASB issued a standards update that provides an alternative for the financial reporting of intangible assets and goodwill. As a starting point of your research on this topic refer to Appendix A Private Company Accounting in the course textbook.

Students will write a 3-5 page (double-spaced) paper on the private company alternatives for intangible assets and goodwill. Be sure include discussion of comparability and faithful representation in your discussion of the topic. The organization of the paper should include a (1) background section that describes the accounting treatment of the private company alternative, (2) advantages of the private company alternative, (3) disadvantages of the private company alternative, and (4) a conclusion including the authors opinion whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

The research for the paper should include review and analysis of academic and professional journals, professional standards and any other sources that the student deems appropriate. References should be provided at the end of the paper in a suitable format including in text citations. Suitable formats include APA and MLA.
