When ethyne is passed through an ammoniacal solution of copper(I) chloride, a red-brown precipitate of copper(I) acetylide is produced. H-CC-H+2CuCl+2NH3Cu-CC-Cu (red-brown ppt)+2NH4C. Terminal alkynes also react to form a red-brown precipitate. Thus, CH3-CC-H(a terminal alkyne)+CuCl+NH3CH3-CC-Cu(red-brown ppt)+2NH4Cl. Non-terminal alkynes like but-2-yne, CH3CCCH3, lack acidic hydrogen, so they do not react with ammoniacal cuprous chloride.
