Scenario:

All children in the province of Ontario are tested for general intelligence (IQ) in Grade 3 using the current Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV). It has been found that the average child in an Ontario school has an IQ of 100.0 ( = 15.0).

A new educational technique is developed which is supposed to aid in the early development of cognitive skills. A program designed to be implemented into the Grade 2 curriculum was developed using the new education technique, and 10 Ontario schools were selected at random to test out this new program. It was theorized that students who participated in this program would score higher than normal on the WISC-IV when they wrote the test the following year.

After completing grade two, a total of 226 children from the test program moved on to grade 3 and were tested for IQ in the standardized Provincial tests. The average intelligence quotient (IQ) of these students was 102.4 (s= 10.0).

Should this study find favorable differences in IQ, the province plans to implement this new educational program in all its schools in the following year.

Research a phenomenon known as "The Flynn Effect". What would you estimate the average annual increase in intelligence to be based on your research? How could this information be used to modify the null hypothesis you had originally set forth in question 2? Would this change the overall findings in question #6?
