Peacekeepers are sent into a developing or war-torn country to keep the peace. Unlike the military, peacekeepers do not have ample ammunition supplies because they are only present as negotiators and mediators. Since 1948, the United Nations has set up 70 harmonious activities and developed ways to deal with global issues. After analyzing and reflecting on three articles about peacekeeping, I have concluded that it is a difficult way to reestablish harmony and security worldwide because it requires the parties involved to agree on major decisions that can have a lasting impact.

Peacekeepers are sent into post-conflict conditions where violence is progressing or waiting. Therefore, peacekeeping is considered successful if vital missions solve the force of fight viciousness, regular citizens are secured, and struggling dispersion is contained. As a peacekeeper, the task force's role is not to choose sides, which means that they must remain in the middle of the opposing groups. However, the UN has the power to penalize infractions made by one of the groups. Before an operation is set in place, the main parties in the conflict must give consent for peacekeepers to intervene. Without consent, the UN becomes another party in the conflict, which puts lives in danger and defeats the purpose of peacekeeping. One of the main goals of the United Nations is to promote human rights and freedom. The peacekeeping task force protects this idea in countries under suppressive military control. Most of the time, the peacekeeping mandate requires protection when the civilian population is at risk. Peacekeepers often face many difficult obstacles in their operations. The operations are not supplied with the necessary weapons to fight in a war as they have limited ammunition and guns that are only used for intimidation.

In 1975, East Timor, which is located in SouthEast Asia, was invaded by Indonesia. A war broke out, resulting in a significant number of deaths and 500,000 people being evicted from their homes. The Indonesians invaded East Timor because the new government gave East Timor a vote on their countries future, and the vote went overwhelmingly in favor of independence. Once the result was announced, pro-Indonesian militias started a violent campaign. A few months after the invasion, the United Nations Security Council condemned the invasion, calling on Indonesia to withdraw its armed forces from East Timor as the Indonesian's aggression violated international law and the right of self-determination. However, the Indonesian government couldn't contain their citizens' violence, which led Australia to organize and lead the International Force for East Timor (interfet) by working alongside the UN in East Timor. Interfet started arriving at East Timor on September 12, 1999 and contributed over 5,500 personnel. This resulted in Pro-Indonesian militants and the Indonesian government withdrawing their armed forces, police, and officials. Based on the outcomes of this event, I became convinced that the peacekeeping mission in East Timor was a failure as the goals set out by the United Nations were not achieved. The United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) mandate was created to provide security and maintain law and order throughout the territory of East Timor by establishing an effective administration, assisting in the development of civil and social services, ensuring the coordination and delivery of humanitarian assistance, rehabilitation and development assistance, support capacity-building for self-government, assisting in the establishment of conditions for sustainable development. Despite the UNTAET'S main objectives, East Timor was left with many concerns including widespread poverty, unemployment, lack of economic growth, police corruption, and weak leadership. They also planned to remove the majority of UN officials by 2005, however, violence erupted again in 2006, and Australia, Indonesia, and Portugal were forced to send in troops in an attempt to restore order.

In Conclusion, reestablishing harmony and security worldwide by peacekeeping is difficult as several objectives must be achieved for civil society to be created. The violence in East Timor was not put to an end by peacekeeping because numerous citizens in Indonesia were stubborn and would not stop protesting East Timor's independence. Despite INTERFET and UNTAET being created none of the objectives they set out were met and East Timor is just as unstable today as it was before the UN's assistance.
