Two types of conditions that can impair the urinary system are

UTI is a bladder infection that effects the lower urinary tract. However bacteria can also ascend to the upper urinary tract leading to kidney infections. Uti can cause various symptoms including frequent urination, pain while urinating or burning while urinating, cloudy and bloody urine as well as pelvic pain. If left untreated it can spread to kidneys and can cause more severe complications.

Another condition that can impair the urinary tract are kidney stones. Kidney stones are solid minerals and salt deposits that form in the kidneys. Kidney stones obstruct the normal pathway of urine causing significant pain and discomfort.

Understanding the anatomy and functions of the urinary system enables medical coders to accurately assign procedure codes for surgical interventions and diagnostic procedures. For example, knowledge of specific urinary system procedures such as cystoscopy, lithotripsy, or urinary catheterization allows coders to select the appropriate codes to reflect the services provided. They can correctly link procedures and diagnoses to support medical necessity and avoid coding errors or omissions that could impact reimbursement.
