Juvenile Probation Officers:

Juvenile Probation Officers supervise young offenders under the age of 18 years old. They have multiple roles when supervising juveniles on probation, they have to report to the courts to inform how the offender is complying with the conditions of supervision and report any violations. They also have to maintain records of supervision and case management to ensure the prescribed treatments are met. They are required to make announced and unannounced home visits and have to communicate with the parent(s), and other family members to form a relationship to better supervise the juvenile, also communicate with caseworkers, and treatment specialists, and keep notes on the progress of the juvenile.

There are multi-cultural issues with a juvenile probation officer that at times can be difficult for the officers, a wide majority of juveniles supervised are located in the inner city, and depending on the race of the officer and his upbringing could pose an issue with their supervision, for example, a probation officer that grew up in the inner city may have different strategies than an officer that grew up in the suburbs which could make a difference in cooperation from the juvenile and the parent. However, with diversity training that is provided in the academy, most officers will be able to adapt to most diversity issues, also officers should have an open mind with each juvenile under his/her supervision. There are several ways to increase diversity among juvenile probation officers. One way is to recruit officers from a variety of backgrounds. Another way is to provide training on diversity and cultural competence.

Police Officers:

Police officers' roles in our society are to serve the community where they work. They investigate crimes, including motor vehicle violations, respond to emergencies to assist, and make arrests of those that violate the laws. However, in recent years police officers have come under scrutiny due to the increase in police killings and abuse cases that have caused increased concern about the way some police officers have treated people in multi-cultural communities. The use of body cameras has made it easy for those in charge of officers working in the community to investigate complaints of brutality and harassment by officers, also there needs to be more training provided to officers on the need and how to work and relate to these multi-cultural communities and recruit more officers from the communities to help with diversity issues, to help promote trust in the community.

Parole Agents:

Parole agents' duties are to Interview probationers/parolees regularly to evaluate their progress in accomplishing goals and maintaining the terms specified in their probation/parole conditions and rehabilitation plans. Recommend remedial action or initiate court action in response to noncompliance with terms of probation/parole. Prepare and maintain a case folder for each assigned offender. Discuss with offenders

how such issues as drug and alcohol abuse and anger management problems might have played roles in their criminal behavior. Conduct prehearing and presentencing investigations and testify in court regarding offenders' backgrounds and recommended sentences and sentencing conditions. Write reports describing offenders' progress. Supervise people on community-based sentences, such as electronically monitored home detention, and provide field supervision of probationers/parolees by conducting curfew checks or visits to the home, work, or school. Arrange for medical, mental health, or substance abuse treatment services according to individual needs or court orders. Develop liaisons and networks with other parole officers, community agencies, correctional institutions, psychiatric facilities, and aftercare agencies to plan for helping offenders with life adjustments. Communicate with family members so that they understand the conditions of the offender's supervision and what is expected during home visits, also to show that you are there to help the offender complete their supervision successfully. Parole agents are usually Caucasian and face a lot of diversity issues in inner-city communities. However, continued diversity training will help them to understand the communities they serve and help with diversity and multicultural issues.
