A pulp and paper mill has contracted your environmental consulting firm to evaluate the waste produced from a new manufacturing process. The main components in the liquid waste stream have been identified as cellulose (200mg/L) and lignin (200mg/L). This paper mill is located in the pacific northwest where water temperatures vary but are generally low. The paper mill wants to evaluate discharging waste into Mill Creek. Five miles downstream, Mill Creek flows into the larger Braid River. Both Mill Creek and Braid River are flow controlled by dams located upstream. You may assume an atmospheric pressure of 1ATM and that this system is freshwater. Despite the presence of background BOD in both Mill Creek and Braid River, both systems are saturated with respect to dissolved oxygen upstream of any mixing in each system. The following characteristics are known regarding both Mill Creek and Braid River. (15 pts) Draw a conceptual diagram which describes this site. This can be a simple as a box model diagram or more complex, such as a site assessment map. Be sure label all of the relevant flows and known variables. These conceptual diagrams do not need to be to scale. (5 pts each 10 total) After calculating thBOD, your lab performs a seeded B0D5 test using standard 300ml bottles using a 10ml sample of the pulp mill waste. Your resulting BOD test yields the following data. Calculate the BOD5 and BODu(L0) for this experiment if the degradation rate has for this type of organic matter containing is 0.1/ day (20C). (50 pts) Find the critical time in Braid River and the corresponding dissolved oxygen concentrations at the critical point in summer and winter ( 4 total values). Note, both Kd and Kr are temperature sensitive. For Kr, use the Van't Hoff equation to evaluate seasonal differences in the rate constant. You may use 11.7kJ/mol for H during lecture. This question requires repetitive and iterative calculations and I recommend using a database type program such as excel, or matlab to keep track of these calculations. Note, the Van't Hoff Eq is as follows. Keq,T2=(Keq,T1)eRH1xno(T11T21) 4) ( 10 pts ) The state environmental protection agency is concerned that releasing this Pulp Mill waste will negatively impact fish living in the stream. The regulatory limit to protect fish reproduction is 6mg/L in both Mill Creek and Braid River. Is there a temporal aspect that that you should consider regarding this waste and the regulatory limit? Please reference the values you calculate in Question 3 when answering this question. Responses should be thoughtful, logical, and in paragraph form (1-2 paragraphs)
