Shakespeare's Language 1) Words such as "ever" may appear as "e'er". The apostrophe allows the dramatist to save one syllable and fit the lines into the ten syllable limit. 2) Many verbs in the past tense appear as "look'd". If the verb is written in full "looked" it should be pronounced "look-ed". 3) Many words have changed their meaning. Thus, it is ESSENTIAL to use the margin notes! 4) Shakespeare wrote in both PROSE and POETRY: PROSE: is written in paragraphs and sentences. There is no regularity of pattern. The uneducated, non-aristocratic characters tend to speak in prose (servants etc.). POETRY: written in lines and stanzas. There is a rigid, regular pattern including rhyme. The educated, aristocratic characters speak in poetry (Kings, Queens, Dukes, Knights etc.). 5) Shakespeare's plays are written in five acts. The five acts are divided into scenes. Each change in scene represents a shift in the location and/or time of the action. The lines in each scene are numbered for easy reference.
