With so many government regulations, both states, federal and international, affecting furniture stores, such as Ikea, many of those laws were created to ensure the safety of the consumer and its employees. Laws such as the Uniform Law Label were created to inform the consumer of the different materials in which their product is made of. In addition to this law, the Uniform Registry Number was created to identify the manufacturer that is producing the product (Benson & Reczek, 2012). This helps consumers and companies to be able to identify whether their product was produced in a facility that has recalled products due to errors within the manufacturing facility. Another law to note that benefits the consumer is the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. This act requires that all manufacturers and importers issue a certificate of conformity based on testing of the product (Benson & Reczek, 2012). This act goes into detail and lists all of the Standards Developing Organizations that develop and maintain the consensus standards and test methods that apply directly to furniture. Although most of these regulations and laws were created for the health and welfare of the consumers, these laws ultimately protect the businesses from having to deal with lawsuits from future claimants and ensure their products are following the standards required for furniture stores.
