Research Study The qualty of care given by heialth care providers can bleraly be a matter of Ife or death. Some of the most vulnerable patients are those in long-term skoled nursing faclities, tnsaring the safety and wel-being of these residents is both cntical and chalengng. A study conducted at a faclity in Massachusetts specializing in the treatment of people with a chronic Alness showed that the implementation of a Wifibased localoabion system cut the average time needed to find residents from over 5 minutes to less than 2 minutes. It aiso alerted staff with a high degree of accuracy when high-risk residents went outside (false positive rate of 9.1%; false negative rate of 1.7% ). Devices were mounted on residents' wheelchairs, and monitoring softwate was instaled on staff compaters. The fackty in the study alteady had a Wof isystem instaled. The study's authors conclude that "Using timely resident location information can provide signdicant gains for both operational effioency (finding residents) and enhanced resident safety (outdoor alerts).
