Few topics invite more heated feelings and controversy than that of adults who are attracted to children. In A Place for Paedophiles, filmmaker Louis Theroux seeks to get to the root of the issue by speaking with patients at the Coalinga Mental Hospital in California.

At Coalinga, more than 500 convicted sex offenders are in treatment, attempting to find a way to combat their urges so that they can re-join society. Although many have already spent a long time in prison, most have been judged as unsafe for release. Theroux spends time with patients and mental health professionals, discussing the challenges of living with this problem and what solutions may be available to stop child abuse from taking place.

Sexual disorders

All of the disorders we will cover this week cause clinically significant distress or impairments in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning. In this weeks lecture we will only cover the disorders outlined by the DSM

DSM Identified Disorders Voyeuristic Disorder- Observing an unsuspected person Exhibitionist Disorder- Exposer of genitals to an unsuspected person Frotteuristc Disorder- Touching or rubbing against nonconsenting person Sexual Masochism Disorder- Act of being humiliated, beating, bound, etc. Sexual Sadism Disorder- Arousal from the physical or psychological suffering Pedophilic Disorder- Sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children Fetishistic Disorder- Arousal from nonliving objects or highly specific focus Transvestic Disorder- Cross-dressing (not to be confused with transgender!)

Sexual Disorders and Crime Violence is seen in lust/sex/passion driven crimes Sexual homicide Intense desire to beat, whip or club someone leading to death Anthropophagy [an-thro-poff-uh-g] Intense desire to eat the flesh or body parts of another Piquerism [p-ker-ism] (from the French piquer - "to prick") Intense desire to stab, wound, or cut the flesh of another

Necrosadism [necro-sadism] Sexual contact with a dead body Pedophilia Intense desire by an adult or older adolescent to become sexually attracted to prepubescent children.

Pedophilic Disorder Cont..... Pedophilic disorder can be diagnosed in people who are willing to disclose this paraphilia as well as in people who deny any sexual attraction to children, despite objective evidence of pedophilia. For the condition to be diagnosed, an individual must either act on their sexual urges or experience significant distress as a result of their urges or fantasies.

Pedophilic Disorder Cont..... Without the two criteria (disclosure or evidence of pedophilia AND act on their sexual urges or experience significant distress) a person may have a pedophilic sexual orientation but NOT pedophilic disorder. For example a person my be attracted to barely over age person who may not even look their again (they look younger) - This is a pedophilic sexual orientation.

Causes The causes of pedophilia (and other paraphilia's) are not known. There is some evidence that pedophilia may run in families, though it is unclear whether this stems from genetics or learned behavior. Other factors, such as abnormalities in male sexual hormones or the brain chemical serotonin, have not been proven as factors in the development of paraphilia's or pedophilia. A history of childhood sexual abuse is also a potential factor in the development of pedophilias but this, too, has not been proven.

Sex and Deviance One of the greatest hurdles to defining sexual deviance is a lack of clarity as to what actually constitutes offensive sexual behavior. Problematic Sexual Conduct has three components: Deviant Unusual or very atypical sexual interests and preferences Not necessarily unlawful (e.g., fetishism, consenting BDSM) Unlawful May be deviant, but does not have to be (e.g., rape, child molestation) Hypersexual Very high frequency of engagement in behavior May or may not be either deviant or unlawful
