"Cock doodle doo" is what I hear, the blue and orange in the sky let me know it's morning time. Coffee beans turning to grounded coffee give off that wake up in the morning smell and taste for breakfast . My warm fluffy bathroom rope makes me want to slip back in bed. Many writers choose to use sensory details in their work, In order to engage the reader on a deeper level. This allows the reader to not only visualize the events taking place, but also to feel as if they are experiencing them first-hand. In my essay I want to analyzes how the writers we've studied so far this semester utilize sensory details in their work. In doing so I will discuss all five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell in reference to the Nikki Giovanni's poem "Beautiful Black Men", June Jordan's "Poem about My Rights" and Claude McKay poem "American"

Many authors decide to include details that appeal to the reader's senses in their writing because they believe this will encourage the reader to get more involved. In the poem " Beautiful Black Men" Giovanni uses sensory details to describe the physical appearance of black men. She uses sight and touch to describe the men's skin, hair, and bodies. She also uses sound to describe the sound of their voices. One example of this can be seen in Giovanni's poem she writes by: " and i scream and stamp and shout for more beautiful beautiful beautiful black men with outright afros" (Giovanni). By including these sensory details of touch, she invites the reader to share in the intimacy of the moment. She extends an invitation to the reader to participate in the personal nature of the occurrence. The author also say "preaching in churches, driving their hogs walking their dogs, winking at me in theirfirered, limegreen, burntorange royalbluetighttightpants thathug whatilike to hug (Giovanni). In this quote Giovanni utilize sensory detail to describe how she hears beautiful black man when they are in church preaching, driving their hogs or walking their dog. Also, she describes with color the clothes that they wear which is also sight, another sensory detail she uses to engage the reader. The speaker uses these details to create a image of these men that is both physical and emotional.

In "Poem about My Rights" Jordan, the writer uses sensory details like touch and sight to describe the experience of being a black woman in American. Jordan write " my body posture my gender identity my age my status as a woman alone in the evening/ alone on the streets/alone not being the point/ the point being that I can't do what I want to do with my own body because I am the wrong sex the wrong age the wrong skin" ( Jordan 1/4). In this quote she uses sight to describe the color of her skin as well as saying evening to give a visual of time , and she uses touch to describe the feeling of being discriminated against. Jordan is able to do this by using sensory details to describe the feeling of being oppressed in her own body. She articulated in such a way that I, as a reader, was able to have a deeper knowledge of how she felt during those moments which you can vicariously live through her poem.

America is a fabrication designed to make us believe that we are all equal, yet McKay noticed racism and injustice , which is why we need to safeguard our identities and bodies. I think McKay accomplishes this in his poetry by employing sensory elements to illustrate the type of hardship experienced by Americans towards black peoples. In the poem "America" McKay use of taste and smell draw a picture for the reader to understand how black people were treat in America. McKay writes "Although she feeds me bread of bitterness, And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth, Stealing my breath of life, I will confess I love this cultured hell that tests my youth" ( McKay 1/2). The sensory of taste come to play when he using bread as a symbol of something that's is supposed to taste good and smell wonderfully well being healthy for you to eat. Instead, America give him taste and smell of bitterness which is the injustice that he had to swallow and by swallowing tigers tooth which I imagine it not going down smoothly is like the injustice of being tried differently. The problem with America is that we don't ask question that can lead to the answers. Consequently this leaves us to discriminate against people of color, religion and class.

By including details about sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, writers are able to create a more immersive and intimate experience for the reader. This enables the reader to both envision and feel as though they are actually experiencing the events as they happen. I wanted to examine how the authors we have studied this semester Nikki Giovanni's poem "Beautiful Black Men", June Jordan's "Poem about My Rights" and Claude McKay poem "American" use sensory elements in their writing. In doing so, I'll talk about each of the five senses: taste, smell, touch, sound and sight. By including these details, the reader is able to get a better sense of the character's life and what it is like for them.
