Can you think of other data points that the organization might collect that they did not mention?
What other skill sets do you think are needed for employees to be more data-driven?
How do you think data governance can positively impact the decision? What could be a plan for capturing and using data in the organization? Are there any concerns about the data? How would consumers react if they knew their data was being used in the way you are proposing?
For both groups, in particular for those of you who decide to write or react to a post referencing government or the public sector or a non-profit organization:
How might data culture and/or governance in these sectors impact the overall data-driven societ
Carefully read the problem your classmate has articulated.
In my scenario, I have been hired by Olive Garden to improve their data culture and governance.
Problem: the customer wait time is unreasonable and a lot of dissatisfied customers are leaving the lobby and going across the street to Outback Steakhouse.
Olive Garden could use data analytics to help solve this problem in several ways. First, they could start gathering customer data by using an app to join the wait list. This app could track things like name, phone number, email address, age, demographics, etc. Once the customers are finished at the restaurant, Olive Garden could send them a survey to gather additional information on their favorite menu items, service, and food ratings, etc.
Once Olive Garden starts gathering customer data, they could use the analytics to make executive decisions to help address the wait times. One way they could do that is by possibly adding more locations in specific areas or expanding some of their locations to hold more people. Another way would be to use predictive analysis to determine the busiest times and ensure they have enough staff to support the influx of people. They could use the same predictive analysis to ensure their menu items are stocked properly. The survey results could also help narrow down supplies by determining which menu items are the most popular. Knowing this would also help the chefs proactively prepare some of the meals ahead of time.
To ensure employees are "data aware", I would ask Olive Garden to send all employees through a quick data governance course on an annual basis. The employees could watch a video and have a quick quiz at the end to indicate their awareness and understanding of the importance of data governance. I would also ensure that only specific employees have access to the data. Not everyone at Olive Garden needs access to the data but everyone should be aware of it.
