Labour is forced to trade time and effort in exchange for wages to purchase the essentials to live. The power imbalance between capital and labour affects the dynamics of the employment relationship because while both parties, capital and labour, have an interest in the continued financial viability of an organization, they have other interests that diverge. The main interest of capital is to maximize profit of which they typically do by minimizing labour costs. This is often done through lowering wages, outsourcing work and increasing workloads. When one, or all of these, occur, workers are left with either a job that pays little to nothing, with no benefits and a poor health and safety culture, or no job at all.
