Describe the role of carbohydrates in human life.
Carbohydrates are an essential part of the human diet. Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are all natural carbohydrates that provide energy to the body, particularly through glucose. Glucose is a simple sugar that is a component of starch and an ingredient in many foods. Glucose breaks down cellular respiration, which produces energy, ATP. Carbohydrates have a few different molecular structures including monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. Some people believe that carbohydrates are bad for you and that they should be avoided, however, they have been part of the human diet for centuries with evidence of ancient civilizations storing wheat, rice, and corn. Carbohydrates should be supplemented with protein in a well-balanced diet, along with vitamins and minerals. Carbs contain soluble and insoluble elements. Fiber is insoluble and can be mostly found in vegetables because of cellulose. Cellulose is an organic compound made of linear chains linked to glucose molecules. It mostly is made up of a plants cell wall and provides structural support. Fiber helps remove excess cholesterol from the body. Meals containing whole grains and vegetables make a person feel full. While reducing carbohydrates from someones diet may be necessary, it may not be the best option for everyone.
