CarbonetiX, is an engineering consultancy dedicated to carbon emission reduction projects. This com- pany is asked to provide consultation to a factory in the construction industry that has decided to limit its environmental impact on the environment by pumping the carbon dioxide it produces to a biomedical laboratory located 2 km away instead of venting it into the atmosphere. This commercial laboratory requires large amounts of carbon dioxide for many applications such as cell culturing. The factory is going to use a horizontal pipeline with a length of 2500 m and an inner diameter of 0.15 m with a fanning friction factor of f 0.0005. Carbon dioxide has a molecular weight of 44 g mol-. The flow is isothermal at 250 and it flows into a storage tank with the pressure of 150 kPa located in the laboratory. Neglecting the kinetic energy term, answer the following questions. = (a) What is the mass flow rate of carbon dioxide? (b) What is the pressure one-quarter of the way down the pipe? What would the pressure be if you were pumping an incompressible liquid? Are the pressure values the same? Why or why not? (c) An operator at the facility claims that they tripled the initial pressure from 500 kPa to 1500 kPa in order to triple the flow rate of the carbon dioxide into the reservoir. Did the operator achieve their goal? Why or why not? (d) What is the maximum initial pressure you would recommend in order to maximize the flow rate of the carbon dioxide? What is the velocity of the gas at the end of the pipe under this condition? At what percentage of the speed of sound is the gas flowing at in this condition?
