Career Connection

As students are taking various courses throughout their program, they sometimes find themselves asking questions such as:

• Are these concepts really going to help me now or in the future?
• Does anyone use these concepts in the "real-world?"
• What type of job would a person have to apply these skills?
• How can I use the skills and concepts that I'm learning in the course to advance my career?

Well, I'm going to do to answer those questions for you throughout the course! I'll do so using "Career Connection" postings in which we examine careers in the field, how you can apply these skills in specific roles, and how you can build upon your knowledge that you're gaining in order to advance in the field.

Our Career Connection this week focuses on real-world jobs in the field that require the skills that you're learning in the reading this week! Here's the approach that I use. I use very common career websites such as Careerbuilder, Indeed, Monster, and Robert Half. I then search the job postings for requirements and responsibilities that match our studies. As we have students from all over the U.S. and abroad, I search nationally. Therefore, the jobs that I list may or may not be reflective of the opportunities that are available in your given area at a given time. However, they should still give you a great indication of the types of positions that would use these concepts and skills. Additionally, it may help you as you're planning your own career path and thinking about what you may want to do in the future. I can guarantee you that there are more positions in the field than you think!

Job title: Assistant Management Accountant

Responsibilities include: Assist the Senior Management Accountant in the preparation of month end accounts; Prepare and post ad hoc journals, including intercompany transactions; Monitor and assist in progressing supplier invoices through the Group Accounts Payable function; Assist with ad hoc projects.

Job title: Cost Accounting Consultant

Responsibilities include: Collects data to determine costs of material, direct labor, and overhead as part of month end closing procedure. Develops and reviews labor and overhead standard costs to reflect actual costs on periodical basis. Analyzes actual manufacturing costs and prepares periodic report comparing standard costs to actual production costs. Provides management with reports with analysis of cost variances by products Assist and lead in special projects as necessary including process improvements, efficiency recommendations and adherence to accounting policies and procedures. Prepares monthly production yield, cost variance and efficiencies report and analysis. Prepares detailed account analysis and reconciles sales, cost and inventory accounts. Coordinates with IT department for system issues, maintenance and development such as production, material purchasing, goods receiving, goods shipping, and other inventory related transactions.

Job title: Cost Accountant

Responsibilities include: Facilitate the creation of a BOM for every product we manufacture; Accumulate all production hours worked in producing every product, paying special attention to assure all production hours are recorded each day and that they are recorded accurately and to the proper product; Analyze production hour variances and report causes to management; Reconcile to the GL and make appropriate entries to adjust GL to actual.
