Careers in Tourism A. Tourism, holidaymaking and travel have become an important part of our social life these days. They are leisure activities which means there is no work to do. They help to make the difference between work and relaxation. Modern tourism is organised and is usually for fixed periods of time. This means people go on a journey, and stay in a different place (or places) for a short period of time. Because millions of people now enjoy traveling, tourism is one of the areas that offers the best opportunities for career development. B. Tourism industry includes transportation, accommodation, entertainment and leisure activities of travellers. From the moment a traveller books a flight or a cruise to the time he or she goes home, the tourism industry handles all these services - bookings for flights, hotels, cruises, entertainment features and any fun activities. C. Some of the most common jobs in tourism are agency manager, regional tourism manager, tour operations manager, visitor information officer, tourism consultant, tour guide, and cruise ship attendant. The tourism industry also offers opportunities for jobs in marketing and advertising because travellers always look for the best experience or need assistance in many ways. You can also work for a hotel, resort or cruise ship in other roles. At a hotel, you can work at the front desk or take guests on guided tours. D. Working in the tourism industry can be difficult in terms of hours. Your working time will depend on which tourism-related job you take. Some tourism jobs run regular 9 am to 5 pm while others are a bit more unusual. Tour guides, for example, usually work regular 9 am to 5 pm to keep up with visitors who are most active during the day. Some tours, however, run at night so not all tour guides can finish at 5 p.m. Working for hotels and transportation services often means working first, second and third shifts. E. If you want to join the tourism industry, it is good to have strong communication skills. A friendly personality is also a huge positive, especially if you like doing guided tours. Organisation and multi-tasking skills will also be necessary as you will have to manage check-ins, check-outs, pick-ups, drop-offs, and tour and activity times. Tourism never stops moving, and so long as there are cruises to be booked and tours to be taken, there will always be a demand for skilled workers in the tourism industry. image text in transcribed
