Carl Jung believed that each person is either more energized by their external or internal world. Those energized by the outer world were defined as extroverts, while those energized by the internal were called introverts (Jung, 1923). Jungian therapy is said to help us develop greater self-awareness and understanding of the unconscious and our experiences (Fordham, 2018). Given that introverts are more comfortable with their inner world of thoughts and feelings, I would assume that they would be better suited for the deep exploration of their inner world through exploring the unconscious. However, Jung also noted that none of us are fully one or the other, but we do connect to one more than the other. In fact, Jung believed that if you take an extrovert you will find his unconscious has an introverted quality because all the extroverted qualities are played out in his consciousness and the introverted are left in the unconscious (McGuire and Hull, 1977). Therefore, I wonder if the extrovert would report higher success with Jungian psychology because more could be discovered/revealed in their unconscious because they do not often explore their inner world.

What are your thoughts? Are you an introvert or an extrovert? How might Jungian therapy benefit you?
