Carol Kaye asked her cousin Chris Stort to work with her at her business, Beautiful Collections, in the State of Louisiana. At the time Stort was involved in every aspect of the business - bookkeeping, marketing, and design; however, he was not paid a salary but was reimbursed on his personal credit card which Kaye also used. Stort was committed to taking no profits as he wanted the business to succeed. When the two got into a serious argument over a very important customer's request, Kaye told Stort, "You are fired!", but Stort insisted that he was now a partner to the company and could not be fired.
