+ SOCSCI 197 Media 8 questions Globalization is Good Name This film presents a point of view shared by most Republicans and many Democrats until recently. Now both political parties have flipped to a more protectionist anti-free trade and movement of goods, services, investment capital and people. My own view is contained in the review sheet included in this unit. You are not required to agree with any of these views but you should understand them. 1. What does the anti-globalization movement view itself defending against what threat? What does this documentary argue about what needs defending against what threat? 2. Before the Industrial Revolution and the arrival of global capitalism [modernization] what was the economic condition of peasants all around the world? How many people were lifted out of poverty over the last 50 years? What was Sweden like 150 years ago? 3. What 3 countries did he choose to represent different points along the demographic transition/economic development model we have previously described? Basically we have representatives of stages 2, 3 and 4. Try to match up which is which. + 4. How did Taiwan change economically in just a few decades? What got it started? What happened next? What positive role was described for sweatshops? Note that this views them as a temporary phenomenon. What comes to replace sweatshops and why does that happen? The 3 success stories summarize a pattern of upward social mobility. How much poverty remains in modern Taiwan? What political side effect was described for Taiwan as it became modernized? [This is currently under threat from Mainland China.] What was the point about "Cha for Tea"? 5. What opposite view of Nike and what it is doing in countries like Viet Nam was presented? [Anti-globalist] [Pro-globalist] In what way is the Nike factory in Viet Nam a sweatshop?What was the average pay for the production workers? How does that compare to locally or state owned factory wages? [Which are higher than what peasant or farm laber earns.] Why would anyone want to work there other than money? 6. Why does Nike want to look good and showcase its factories to the many visitors who tour the facilities? How could Nike afford to pay what it does plus offer fringe benefits and training opportunities for advancement? How did the Nike factory create locally owned and run business opportunities outside the factory? [Mention a few examples.] Why is the Nike factory in Thailand still producing even though it pays workers double what they get in Viet Nam? How can he argue that if wages get 5o high that Nike has to move elsewhere that that is a very good thing? [Think back to Taiwan and its sweatshops.] 7. How did Taiwan and Kenya compare conomically fifty years ago?
