Case #2- Mary (43-year old female) Mary voluntarily sought treatment for behaviors she says have increased over three decades. She first noted that at the age of 16, she tended to clean her room twice a day, once before school and once after school. She mentioned that 'on occasion' she would be late to school as she did not like the way that the cleaning in the morning turned out- this forced her to re-clean the room until she was satisfied with it and could go to school. She noted that when this would happen, her mom and her would verbally fight as Mary was making her mom late for work and herself late for school. She noted that this cleaning ritual would increase towards the end of each term when exams approached. In college, Mary noted that her cleaning tendency subsided as her roommate was also very tidy and would help keep the dorm free of clutter and would dust often. During this time, Mary noted that her cleaning tendency was reduced to cleaning her dorm only after classes. However, she did note that when friends would be in the dorm room, she would intensify her cleaning for a day or two afterwards. When asked if she often thought about having to clean her room in high school or while in the dorm in college, she noted that she had 'occasional ideas' during class but that she did not constantly think about it. She then admitted that "things became progressively worse while dating and now with kids." Mary did not want to discuss her behaviors during this time period, but rather provided details to "how things are now." Currently, she orders her husband and two kids to leave their shoes outside and to throw their dirty clothes into the washing machine in the garage and to change into clean clothes that she has laid out for them before entering the house. She mentioned that she will not allow her kids friends to play inside the house because they "make every damn thing gross!" and that her kids now only play at other houses because of this. During the day, she will spend the time that her husband and kids leave the house (about 7am) until they come home (about 5:30pm) cleaning the house with a custom-made mixture of cleaning products. Often on the weekend she will "kick them all out" so that she can clean the house as well. She admitted that she knows the house is clean after one go-through, but that over the past two years she has increased to multiple cleanings to calm her thoughts. Mary disclosed that she is seekipage vice now the her roommate from college wants to visit with her family next month, but that she is afraid of "looking like I belong in a looney bin" which menus would be in the OM TOOM, STI would intensity nel cleaning for a day or two alter waius.
