Case 3: Robert, age 27 is a handsome successful account executive on wall street. He seriously considers marriage to a beautiful 21 year old recent graduate of an "ivy league" university nursing program. His application to an exclusive health club required a comprehensive health examination. Tests and retests of his blood show him to be unmistakably positive for the human immune deficiency virus (HIV). Nevertheless, Robert sees advantages in marrying and not telling his nurse friend the truth. He believes that she will care for him devotedly as her husband when the disease becomes symptomatic. She has useful scientific, medical and nursing knowledge of the treatment of the disease that may prolong his life. Once infected, she will have less reason to abandon him. The examining physician and the nurse practitioner reflect on the morality of notifying the girl friend and other possible contacts of the facts of Robert's health status. Should they tell? Not to tell, while not a falsehood is a deception.
