Case 4. Martha and Ted Harding, owners of the largest travel agency in Salt Lake City, were invited on a 'Familiarization" tour of Australia by that country's Ministry of Tourism. They were part of a group of eight U.S. travel agents who were being wined and dined and shown all the major tourist attractions by the ministry in hopes that they would recommend Australia as a vacation spot to their clients. Shortly after their arrival, they attended a lavish cocktail party sponsored by the Sydney Association of Hotels and Restaurants. Everyone seemed to be very cordial and good-spirited. Yet Martha noticed that she got cool glances from some of their Australian hosts when she declined a drink. Moreover, Martha noticed that the party was segregated sexually, the men talking at one end of the room and the women talking among themselves at the other. Martha was beginning to feel increasingly uncomfortable at the cocktail party. What could you tell Martha that might have made her feel more at home?
