Case Directions:
All work will be completed in your groups.
Read the case on Southern Electronics, Inc.

Prepare a fifteen minute presentation using PowerPoint slides.
Type a two page (double spaced) executive summary of your findings.
Submit your file(s) through Carmen by the start of class indicated on the course schedule. Only

Complete your group evaluation form individually and submit it through Carmen.
Present your analysis on the date listed on the course schedule (Case Presentations). Be prepared
to ask the other groups questions during the Q&A period.
Use the questions below as a GUIDELINE to help you analyze the case. Do not answer each question
in painful detail in your presentation.
Goal: You should be able to identify the lowest cost solution and become familiar with using a
foreign/free trade zone in international trade. Then, make a recommendation considering all factors (cost,
flexibility, control, quality standards, political and economic conditions, etc.) and recommend the best
solution. You should consider factors beyond price.
Expected Deliverables: (i.e., what you have to turn in)
PowerPoint with the following minimum requirements:
Costs associated with each option
Analysis of the various options
Excel spreadsheet analysis
Recommended solution
Two page (double spaced) executive summary covering the same topics as above
15-minute discussion of your findings
Ask the other groups questions during the Q&A period
Guideline: (the case should address these, but dont just answer #1-5; these are the basics.)
1. Calculate the total manufacturing and distribution costs if the widgets are assembled in the three
locations.
2. What are the major cost factors at each location that create the differences in your calculations?
3. What assembly location do you recommend? Why?
4. What are the potential drawbacks or limitations of the location that you selected?
5. What other international logistics issues (not presented in this case) should be considered before
selecting an assembly location?
Hints: Dont focus all of your energy on the numbers. Yes, they are very important, but there are a lot of
non-quantifiable aspects that you also need to consider. Ensure you provide adequate effort analyzing
those portions. Remember that there is not a perfect answer, you must support your choices!
