The XYZ Company manufactures boat anchors in a variety of sizes, shapes, and weights. The combination of these three design elements is optimized to produce anchors that are appropriate for a variety of boats, waterways, currents, wind, and wave action. The anchors are made from a mixture of three metals that are melted together and then poured into molds by a robot controlled by a computer.

The 25 lbs. anchors are made in batches of 10,000, which requires one 8-hour work shift, and are shipped to 3,500 retail stores across the United States and Canada. The 25 lbs. anchors have been manufactured using the same process and the same blend of materials for 5 years. The XYZ Company has designed the manufacturing process to produce anchors with a mean weight of 25 lbs. and with a standard deviation of 1 lb. The anchor weights produced by this process are normally distributed.

The company monitors the stability (consistency of quality) of its manufacturing process by testing 1% of its production for each batch. It selects the units for testing by programming the production computer to divert every 100thanchor from the end of the production line. To determine the first unit selected for testing, the computer uses a random number between 1 and 100 to select the number of the first anchor diverted and then continues with every 100thanchor from that point until the end of the production run for that batch.
