Case Study 1
Anne is a 14 yr old year. Before this year she was an active member on various sport teams and was very active in community athletic events. Last year you got to know Anne as you were an assistant coach on her community soccer team. You met her mother who shared that she and Anne's father were going through a divorce and that Anne had been very upset by this.
You are the Child and Youth Worker at the local High School. You have asked to set up a school team meeting to discuss the following:
Anne whose is in grade 10. The school is worried about Anne recent presentation. You are new to the school and not sure of all the policies and practices. You talk to your supervisor who asks you to develop a log looking at Anne attendance and recent school performance.
Since September you have noticed that Anne has been missing classes frequently, and her attendance at school has become a serious concern. She did try out for the school basketball team but after one practice she never showed up again-the coach tried to call her but never was able to get a hold of her.
The school asked you to connect with Anne as they are concerned about her inconsistent attendance and the possibility of her failing this term despite having been of the school's honor role last year.
You have noticed the following: Anne seems to have lost a significant amount of weight -as seen in her face, torso, and legs. She has new friends that are not involved in Anne past interest in athletics.
Her physical presentation is poor -hair is not washed-clothes looking like they need a wash, and her complexion is pasty. In your initial meeting with you Anne is polite to you but avoids any follow-up requests to meet with you. Anne is failing most of her courses and seems not to be interested in passing. Anne's mother wishes to be involved but is challenged by her work schedule, and her father has moved out of the house and lives about an hour away.
As a follow up to the meeting you have been asked to discuss the school's concerns with Anne's parents. How would you approach the conversation with Anne's parents.
