Case Study Cindy Cindy is a 17 y/o female who was admitted with several cuts in both of her wrists. She told the ED staff members that her "boyfriend broke up with me" and "I just want to die...I knew I should not have trusted him or anyone". During the interview, she states that she has a history of emotional abuse and neglect in her birth family. She also reveals that she has a fear of closeness and a sense of being out of control about her emotions and her life in general. She also states that she has never been able to rely on anyone to be there for her emotionally. The clinical notices that she is experiencing unconditional acceptance, normalizing of the anger and sense of being out of control, and the need of having a secure support system.

She also asks the teacher for help and starts to receive encouragement and praise for her efforts. Johnny also struggles with science, but his parents are uninterested in assisting him with his nightly homework. He feels bad about the poor grades he receives on his science assignments but is not sure how to overcome the situation. His teacher is critical of his work but does not offer any extra assistance or advice. Eventually, Johnny just gives up, and his grades become even worse. While both children struggled with this aspect of school, Dianna received the support and encouragement she needed to overcome these difficulties and still build a sense of mastery. Johnny, however, lacked the social and emotional encouragement he needed.
