Case Study for Airline Operations AVN 2030/EAAVN 2030

Extreem Airways (IATA Code; XA) was formed in July 2000 by the merger of two smaller US-based carriers, Farrell Air Holidays Inc. (Farrell Air) and APEX Air Services Inc. (APEX)

Farrell Air was formed in 1976 to operate non-scheduled charter services from Boston, USA to various destinations in the Caribbean and Europe on behalf a major holiday tour operator.

Initially Farrell Air operated two B707-720 turbojet aircraft with an all economy configuration of 190 seats.

Then in 1985 Farrell Air was granted an operating certificate to fly regular scheduled services in its own right from Boston to Kingston, Jamaica; San Juan, Puerto Rico; London Gatwick, UK; Paris Orly Airport in France and Shannon in the Republic of Ireland, with a fleet of five B767-300 aircraft (configuration: 20 business class seats and 200 economy class seats).

In contrast APEX was founded in 1980 to operate scheduled services between Boston Logan Airport and a number of cities in the North Eastern USA, including Albany, NY, New York - La Guardia; Montpelier, VT; Hartford CT; Providence RI and Concord, NH, using a fleet of Cessna Caravan aircraft (capacity 9 seats).

The scheduled services were operated on weekdays (Monday through Friday) while on the weekends the aircraft were available for charter and air taxi services.

In 1990 APEX upgraded its fleet to ATR 42 turboprop aircraft each with a capacity of 45 all-economy seats and expanded its scheduled operations to five more cities along the Eastern seaboard of the United States.

Following the merger of Farrell Air and APEX and the formation of Extreem Airways in year 2000, a new fleet of aircraft were bought: the B777-200 (capacity 34 seats in business class and 280 seats in economy class) replaced the B767 on long haul and international flights, while the B737-800 (12 business class seats and 148 economy class seats) replaced the ATR 42 on domestic and short haul services within the United States.

Finally, after further expansion both within the USA and Internationally, in 2010, Extreem moved its main hub and base of operations from Boston to La Guardia Airport in New York.

Two of the longest serving employees of Extreem Airways are Captain Johnny Cash who is Director of Operations and its Chief Pilot, Captain Hank Williams.

Captain Cash joined Farrell Air in 1980 as a Flight Engineer/Second officer on the B707 fresh from flight school and after 3 years as a Second Officer he was promoted to First Officer B707. In 1985 he transferred to the B767 fleet as First Officer. After a further 10 years as FO on the B767 he was promoted to Captain on the B767. In 2000 he took up the role of Captain B777 and was appointed Chief Pilot in 2010 and then Director of Operations of Extreem Airways in 2015.

In contrast, Captain Williams has always been assigned to the short haul services: starting as a First Officer on the Cessna Caravan, he was transferred to the ATR 42 as FO and then was promoted to Captain on the ATR 42. In 2000 he transferred to the B737 fleet as Captain and was appointed Chief Pilot in 2015, replacing Captain Cash.

End.
