Case Study

Jeremy Hawkins is 16 years old and lives in Athens, Georgia. He is Caucasian. Jeremy's parents divorced when he was 6. His father lives an hour away and only sees him a few times per year. Jeremy lives with his mother who works long hours and is never home. The family is upper middle class, but the lack of parental attention is tough on Jeremy. He used to do well in school but doesn't care about academics anymore. He mostly gets C grades on tests, doesn't turn in many assignments, and sometimes skips classes. Jeremy enjoys video games and basketball and they consume a majority of his time. He has a lot of friends, but is insecure and succumbs to peer pressure easily. Jeremy has been using opioids for 2 years, beginning with prescription drugs and then moving on to heroin. He doesn't think he is at risk of overdosing and has few worries about this habit. Jeremy also drinks alcohol and has sometimes used opioids at the same time. He has recently become more of a delinquent, committing petty thefts at local stores. He does not have plans to go to college and does not have a plan for his life. Jeremy does not have much guidance or a role model who could help him get his life back together.
